PRONE VENTILATION AMONGST PATIENTS WITH SEVERE ACUTE RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME AFTER ABDOMINAL TRAUMA SURGERY: A CASE REPORT

Abstract

Background: Prone ventilation is a relatively new treatment in Viet Nam that improves blood oxygenation in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS is a serious complication with high mortality after abdominal trauma surgery. Methods: Report a clinical case about the resuscitation of patient with ARDS after abdominal trauma surgery by the prone ventilation in combination with pulmonary protective ventilation, muscle relaxants, and increased sedation at Anesthesia Department, Thai Nguyen National Hospital. Results: The case showed that the oxygenation of blood improved rapidly. No complications were recorded during the prone ventilation. Pancreatic fluid leak appeared after surgery. Conclusions: Prone ventilation is safe and effective in improving blood oxygenation in patients with severe ARDS after abdominal trauma surgery.
