Abstract

Background: Dental caries in primary teeth is a common oral health issue in both developed and developing countries. Data on the prevalence and severity of dental caries are essential for implementing effective prevention and early intervention strategies. Objective: To determine the prevalence and severity of dental caries in primary teeth among children aged 4 to 6 years at Bonbee kindergarten in Thai Nguyen City. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 318 children aged 4 - 6 years from Bonbee preschool in Thai Nguyen. The dental decay were examined by three calibrated dentists following standardized diagnostic criteria. Results: The study revealed a very high prevalence of dental caries in primary teeth among 4 - 6 years old children (92.1%). The mean decayed, missing, and filled teeth (dmft) index was 9.95 ± 6.44, with the decayed component (d) accounting for 9.43 ± 6.29, missing (m) for 0.02 ± 0.17, and filled (f) for 0.5 ± 1.29. Carious lesions were most commonly found on the mandibular second primary molars. Conclusion: Given the high prevalence and severity of tooth decay in this population, the development of urgent and targeted caries prevention strategies is necessary to preserve the functional integrity of the primary dentition.
