Abstract

Background: Undescended testis is the most common congenital abnormality of the male reproductive system. If left untreated, it can lead to infertility, testicular cancer, and negatively impact the patient’s quality of life. Objectives: To evaluate the results of surgical treatment for undescended testis in children at Lac Viet Frendship Hospital from 2020 to 2023. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on undescended testis patients operated at Lac Viet University Hospital from January on 2020 to December on 2023. Results: 34 patients with undescended testis met the selection criteria. The average age at surgery was 3.5 ± 2.1 years. The rate of surgery performed on patients under 2 years old was 26.5%. Undescended right testis accounted for 64.7%, left testis for 35.3%, with no cases of bilateral undescended testes. During surgery, the testis was most commonly located in the inguinal canal (53.0%), with 23.5% at both external and internal rings. In 31 out of 34 cases (91.2%), the testes were successfully brought down to the scrotum, with no cases requiring orchiectomy. Surgical complications were rare, with only one case of scrotal hematoma (2.9%). On follow-up after 3 months, 32/34 cases (94.2%) had the testes located in the scrotum. The average volume of the affected testis increased compared to before surgery (0.52 ± 0.17 ml vs. 0.47 ± 0.22 ml); the testicular atrophy index (TAI) decreased compared to before surgery (25.8 ± 16.6% vs. 32.4 ± 19.2%). Conclusions: Orchidopexy has a high success rate with few complications.
