Abstract

Background: Soft tissue defects in the heel area are a common injury and difficult to treat because of the special nature of this area. A peroneal artery perforator fascial skin flap was born and has been used to cover heel defects with high efficiency. Objectives: To evaluate the reconstruction results of the overlying soft tissue defect of the heel with peroneal artery perforator flap. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted on 45 patients who were treated by reconstruction of overlying soft tissue defect of the heel with peroneal artery perforator flap at Viet Duc Hospital from June 2018 to April 2023. Results: The average size of the defect was 40.2 ±36.1 (4-144cm2). The average size of the flap was 65.68 ± 33.87 (12-144cm2). The type of flap used mainly was sural and V-Y. After surgery, AOFAS and BMRC both gave good results. After 3 months, the survival flap completely covered the defect and ensured the normal function of the ankle area. Most of the patients used V-Y flaps for better aesthetics and sensation. Conclusions: The peroneal artery perforator flap had good vitality and reliability. Using this flap to cover the soft tissue defect with the exposed Achilles tendon resulted in good results, preserved normal function with good aesthetic of the ankle area.
