STATUS OF EXPECTANT MOTHERS' KNOWLEDGE ON IRON- FOLIC SUPPLEMENT AT THAI NGUYEN NATIONAL HOSPITAL

Abstract

Background: Supplementing with iron and folic acid is a crucial global strategy for moderating anemia in pregnant women. Alleviating anemia and high-risk pregnancies depends heavily on knowledge of pregnant women. Objective: Identify some relevant aspects and describe the present status of knowledge on iron-folic supplements for expectant mothers. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study involving 180 expectant moms was conducted. Pregnant women were interviewed in the Thai Nguyen National Hospital, using a structured questionnaire that included demographic details and knowledge regarding iron-folic supplementation. Results: Mothers who made up 61.1% of the 180 respondents were well-informed about iron-folic acid supplementation. Mothers who are under 30 years old (OR = 48, p 0.05), married (OR = 3.3, p 0.05), and have had three or more children (OR = 55.3, p 0.05), as opposed to mothers who are under 30, single, and have had less than three children, have a better knowledge. Conclusion: Maternal age, marital status, and birth frequency are associated with differences in maternal understanding of iron-folic supplementation. For first-time mothers, young mothers, and single mothers, it is advised to increase health education, counsel, and give out information on iron-folic supplements.
