Abstract

Background: Bitter leaf is a widely used medicinal herb known for its hypoglycemic effects. To enhance its convenience for use, our research team has developed an instant tea formulation derived from the concentrated extract of bitter leaf. Objective: To establish a formulation for instant tea containing the concentrated extract of bitter leaf collected in Thai Nguyen and to evaluate certain quality criteria of the product. Methods: Bitter leaf was extracted using a cold maceration method combined with ultrasound assistance. Ethanol 70% was used as the solvent, with a drug-to-solvent ratio of 1:12 (g/ml). The extraction was performed three times, each lasting 4 hours. The extract was filtered, and the solvent evaporated to obtain a concentrated extract. The instant bitter leaf tea was prepared using a relatively simple granulation process, incorporating excipients such as isomalt, xylitol, starch, and lactose. Results: The formulated bitter leaf tea exhibited stable physical properties, with dry, uniform, porous, and moderately firm granules. The product met quality standards in accordance with the Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia V, including criteria for physical properties, moisture content, qualitative and quantitative analysis, and microbial limits.
