Abstract
Background: Febrile seizures are a common neurological disorder in young children, in which early recognition of clinical and paraclinical features is essential for timely management. management. Objective: To describe the clinical and paraclinical features of febrile seizures in children treated at the Emergency Department, Ninh Binh Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 139 children aged 6 months to 5 years, diagnosed with febrile seizures and treated at the Emergency Department from August 2024 to July 2025. Data were collected directly upon hospital admission and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Results: The median age of children with febrile seizures was 23 months, with boys accounting for 57.5%. Seizures mostly occurred at a fever ≥39°C (43.2%), within <12 hours of fever onset (89.9%), and were predominantly generalized (89.2%) with a duration of <5 minutes (76.3%). Approximately 66.9% of children recovered normal consciousness after the seizure. Respiratory and otorhinolaryngological infections were the leading causes of fever (74.1%). Laboratory findings showed leukocytosis (67.6%), neutrophilia (68.4%), elevated CRP (56.1%), and mild anemia (48.9%). Conclusion: Febrile seizures are most common among children aged 13–24 months, typically occurring early after high fever. They are mainly generalized, of short duration, and rapidly reversible. The leading causes are respiratory infections, accompanied by inflammatory markers and mild anemia.
