CLINICAL AND SUBCLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF CHILDREN WITH COVID-19 AT THE CENTER FOR RESUSCITATION AND TREATMENT OF COVID-19 PATIENTS, THAI NGUYEN NATIONAL HOSPITAL

Abstract

Background: Research on clinical and subclinical characteristics of children with COVID-19 in Vietnam has remained a limitation so we conducted this study to support scientists and clinicians in better understanding care, diagnosis, and early assessment of COVID-19 disease in children. Objectives: To describe clinical and paraclinical characteristics of children with COVID-19. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 201 children aged 0 to 10 years who were diagnosed with COVID-19 and treated at the Center for Resuscitation and Treatment of COVID-19 Patients, Thai Nguyen National Hospital from January 1, 2022, to December 12, 2022. Results: COVID-19 occured in all ages, children aged 0-2 years accounted for the largest proportion of 48.8% (p<0.05). The male/female ratio was 1.4/1. Fever and respiratory symptoms predominated, of which fever was 89.6%, and cough was 73.1%. Gastrointestinal symptoms were the next most common manifestations, of which 4.5% of the children got diarrhea and 12.4% got vomiting. Most children had a normal white blood cell count of 74.1% and an increased CRP of 24.9%. The majority of children had mild illness (75.1%), 14.9% of children had severe illness, and there were no cases in critical condition (p<0.05). The average hospital stay was 6.87 days (1-18 days). Conclusions: COVID-19 occurred in all ages and the most common age group was 0-2 years old. Fever and respiratory symptoms predominated, followed by gastrointestinal symptoms. Most of the children had normal white blood cell counts and the majority of children had mild to moderate COVID-19.
