Abstract
Background: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a qualitative developmental enamel defect that affects one to four permanent first molars, with or without involvement of permanent incisors. Its etiology is of systemic origin, but is not well understood. Objectives: a cross-sectional study was conducted in order to evaluate the proportion and associated factors of molar incisor hypomineralization on 6 - 11 years old children in Thai Nguyen. Method: 659 children were examined and diagnosed based on EAPD guideline and their parents were face to face interviewed by list of questionnaire. The results identified that the percentage of molar incisor hypomineralization was 26.4%, the factors affecting this habit were: Complicated vaginal delivery (p = 0.015), vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery (p = 0.04) and low birth weight (p = 0.02). There was no statistically significant relationship between sex of the children, prenatal factors, postnatal factors (during the first 3 years of life) and molar incisor hypomineralization. Conclusion: The results suggest that complicated vaginal delivery, vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery, and low birth weight are independent risk factors for molar incisor hypomineralization.
