Abstract
Background: Hemorrhage (bleeding) in general is a condition in which blood (including both components: plasma and visible components) escapes from the circulatory system. Objective: Describe some characteristics of bleeding in newborns at Thai Nguyen National Hospital in 2023 - 2024. Method: Cross-sectional descriptive study conducted on 139 newborns with bleeding symptoms admitted to Thai Nguyen National Hospital for treatment. Results: Preterm infants accounted for 52.5%, the rate of full-term infants is 47.5%. The most common location was simple subcutaneous hemorrhage, accounting for 79.1%, followed by gastrointestinal bleeding (9.4%), pulmonary hemorrhage (5.0%), and only 2.2% of infants had intracranial hemorrhage. The highest rate of bleeding was in the first 24 hours after birth with 75.5% of cases, especially in preterm infants (93.2%), with the late form accounting for the lowest rate (only 5.8%). Infants with low birth weight under 2500 gr accounted for a lower rate than those with weight 2500 gr (45.3% compared to 54.7%). Coagulation disorders accounted for a very high proportion in the study, especially prolonged prothrombin time accounted for 86.3%, the rate of coagulation index disorders in the group of premature infants was higher than that of the group of full-term infants. The rate of thrombocytopenia in the study group was 7.9%. Conclusion: Preterm infants have a higher rate of bleeding, mainly subcutaneous, and usually occur in the first 24 hours after birth. Infants weighing less than 2500 gr are less common, and coagulation disorders, especially prolonged prothrombin time, are common in preterm infants. Thrombocytopenia has also been reported in some cases.
