Abstract
Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) can occur at any age and in both sexes, but women of childbearing age and children account for a higher proportion. Objective: Describe clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients with iron deficiency anemia and analyze some causes of iron deficiency in the study patient group. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 172 patients with iron deficiency anemia at the Department of Clinical Hematology - Thai Nguyen National Hospital from 1/2024 to 10/2024. Results: The group of patients with iron deficiency anemia was found in 68.0% of female patients and 32.0% of male patients, the female/male ratio was 2.1:1; Women over 15 years old had the highest rate of 41.3%, of which pregnant and lactating women accounted for 25.0%, non-pregnant women accounted for 16.3%. The rate of men over 15 years old was 26.7%; 100% of patients had symptoms of pale skin, pale mucous membranes, fatigue, loss of appetite (89.5%), dizziness (87.8%), decreased concentration (65.1%), chest tightness, shortness of breath during exertion (64.5%), palpitations (53.5%), dry brittle nails (51.7%), dry hair loss (47.7%); the rate of moderate anemia accounted for 73.2%, severe (13.4%), mild (10.5%), and very severe 2.9%; The proportion of patients with malignant diseases accounted for 27.3%, followed by pregnant and lactating women at 25.0%, and women with menstrual abnormalities accounted for 19.8%. Conclusion: Iron deficiency anemia is common in women, especially pregnant women, breastfeeding women and those with obstetric problems. Children are also at risk due to micronutrient deficiencies. Early detection and treatment are important to avoid long-term health effects.
