Abstract
Background: Research on the factors associated with hypoglycemia in low birth weight infants in Thai Nguyen is limited. This study aims to provide clinicians with more insight into preventing of early hypoglycemia in this population. Objective: To identify factors associated with hypoglycemia in low birth weight infants at the Neonatal-Pediatric Emergency Department, Thai Nguyen Central Hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 175 low birth weight infants treated at the Neonatal-Pediatric Emergency Department of Thai Nguyen Central Hospital from August 2023 to August 2024. Results: Among the 175 low birth weight infants studied, 52.6% were male and 47.4% were female. The majority of low birth weight infants were preterm (86.9%). The mean gestational age was 33.82 ± 2.83 weeks, and the mean birth weight was 1929.59 ± 436.59 grams. The incidence of hypoglycemia was 65.1%. Univariate analysis identified several factors associated with hypoglycemia, including prematurity, multiple pregnancies (twins), and maternal weight gain greater than 12 kg during pregnancy. In the multivariate analysis, prematurity was associated with hypoglycemia in low birth weight infants (OR = 2.89; 95% CI: 1.14 - 7.32). Conclusions: The incidence of hypoglycemia in low birth weight infants was 65.1%, with prematurity being independently associated with hypoglycemia.
